Family Friday: Psalm 81

Psalm 81:10-11 I am the Lord thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt: open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it. But my people would not hearken to my voice; and Israel would none of me.
As I was having my normal Bible reading time, I was reading this verse when it seemingly jumped off the pages. During those moments, I had felt very overwhelmed with all that had to be done for that week. When I read these verses, tears immediately came to my eyes, as I realized, again, how much God wants us to come to Him with every stress, trial, and overwhelming moment (as seemingly so many women have). God knows every thought we have, as He knows how many hairs are on our head. He is our God, but the Lord desires an intimate relationship with us as well. Why is it that we do not bring every problem and every request to the Lord? God even knows the prayers that we should pray that we do not even know that we need to pray. He said, “Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill it.” The Lord can even strengthen us to pray for the things that we need strength for. What an amazing thought!
One of my favorite verses in the Bible is Philippians 4:6 which states, Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. We should not worry about anything; in fact, it is a sin to worry. Sometimes, I become guilty of being a burden to the ones whom I love because I have become burdened down with pressures that are unnecessary. God wanted to carry Israel through their trials, and be their protector as He showed them how He could save them time and time again as they left Egypt. The psalmist says that Israel would none of me. This verse breaks my heart when I think of how our Creator wants to spend time with us, and yet so many times we ignore Him. How many times do I wake up in the morning, and do not even acknowledge that the Lord kept my heart beating throughout the whole night while I was sleeping? Let us examine ourselves to see what place Christ has in our life. “God, help me to know your power in my life!”

Thoughtful Thursday: Give Thanks (Part 4)

Psalms 100:4 -“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”

“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving…”
We should thank Him for:
-The church
-Religious freedom
-The Gospel

“…and into his courts with praise…”
We should praise Him for:
-His goodness
-His mercy
-His love
-Who He is

“…be thankful unto him…”
We should be thankful for:
-Salvation
-Health
-Family
-Provision
-The Bible
-Heaven
-Freedom

“…and bless his name.”

To “bless” means to praise, to glorify, for benefits received.
Psalms 103:2 says “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:”

We celebrate Thanksgiving today.  As we eat too much delicious food, surrounded by those that we love, let’s use Psalms 100:4 to guide us through our day.  Take the time to thank Him…to praise Him…to bless Him.  We are so undeserving, yet we have so much!  He is so deserving of it all and so much more!  Give Him Thanks!!

Monday's Message: Pureness

2 Corinthians 6:4-6
4 But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,
5 In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;
6 By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,

Before we continue our study I want to note that last week we looked at the Apostle Paul’s description of fasting in 2 Corinthians 11:27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.
This description is most likely not talking about the practice of withholding from enjoying food and/or drink for the purpose of petitioning God, but more a description of how Paul was afflicted and went without food often due to the perilous conditions of his missionary journeys. But we can see how his willingness to go without food and to suffer for Christ helped bring the blessing of God in his life.

Now, in today’s study we begin a new set of descriptors in verse six. We have been looking at the “ins” describing being surrounded by or enveloped in something in verses four and five; verse six begins a new set with the adverb “by”. “By” means through the instrumentality or agency of something. Remember that all the ideas in this list refer back to verse four, and are ways that we are to be approving ourselves as ministers of God. So the first instrument that is listed that we are to use is “pureness”. The word “pure” means; free from anything that does not belong, or, not contaminated with pollutants. God is telling us that by living a pure and holy, or separated life, we will be approving ourselves as ministers of God. And in case you might be thinking, “I’m not a minister, so this doesn’t apply to me”, know that minister is simply another word for servant, and if you have been born again by the spirit of God then you are called to be a servant to God.

Romans 6:18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.

Romans 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

Galatians 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

When we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and were born again into God’s family we are told by God to be pure, and another term for purity is holiness. Just as God called the children of Israel to be different from the surrounding people by keeping themselves clean and not practicing the wicked customs of the pagans, and to keep the entirety of the old covenant law, we as New Testament believers are required to be different from the world, to live clean lives and to have a reputation that is above reproach.

1 Peter 1:14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:
15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

This is a quote from Leviticus 11:44 For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

So what exactly are we to separate from and keep ourselves pure from? Well, the first, and most obvious answer to that is sin. Sin can destroy a Christian, a family, a church, and a nation that does not keep itself pure from it. God is pure and He wants us to be pure as well, for many reasons, one reason being that sin brings misery and death.

James 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

One way for the Christian to decide if something is pure or not is to ask the question, “Is this activity, movie, clothing, music, church, humor, book, website, radio show or conversation, etc. of God or of the world?” Meaning, is this something that honors the Lord Jesus Christ or is it something that comes from the world, from the deceitful heart of the unbelieving world around us?

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

In the end, it is Jesus Christ who purifies us through His shed blood, and through His Word and Holy Spirit. As long as we are alive in the flesh we can never fully purify that flesh. But we should seek the strength of God and continually strive to live a life separate from the filthiness of this world.

1 Peter 1:17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:
23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Family Friday: Jessica's Story

November 20, 2011 – The Day God Spared my Life

God is all about time. Not a certain number of days or years, ~ A time for everything in our lives for every purpose He has planned for us and everyone else under heaven.
Five years ago today should've been my time to die. I was thrown from a car going 80mph on a pitch black highway. But, instead it was my time to be built up ~ to really experience God on a level I never have before and probably never will again until heaven.
It's amazing to me how real God was to me that night five years ago. It's like He was right there. He took away my fear. He gave me Peace. He protected me. He was my rescuer, my deliverer. I literally saw how His wings had covered me so that the window that shredded my stomach didn't cut deep enough to hit any organs. I got 80 staples, but no organs were hit!!! I also know His arms lifted me up and gently placed me on the ground on the side of the highway so no cars hit me and no head trauma was present. I marveled at His presence with me during that time. I relive it often. It's one of my favorite memories, because after that accident no one could ever tell me my God is not real. I heard Him that night. I saw His handiwork. He was all I needed for such a time as that.
Is it like that every day? No. But He is all I need ~ the joy in the mundane of everyday life. He is the grace I need in the valleys of hurt and unforgiveness. He is the mercy in my times of rebellion. He is the shelter I need in the rainy depressing times. He is always what is needed for just the time of life I'm in.
I don't know the reason why God spared me that day. But I do know that I want to be for others what He is for me always. For our little girl, I want to be the healing love she needs for such a time as this. If you're my friend, I want to be an exhorter and encourager in your times of need. If God has our paths to cross, I want to be what He needs me to be for you since there is a purpose in the time He has us in each others' lives. All of our purposes are so unique, yet so intertwined ~ I don't want to get so caught up in God’s plan for me that I don't help others realize Gods purpose for them.

Thoughtful Thursday: Give Thanks (Part 3)

Psalms 100:4 -“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving…”
We should be thankful for:
-The church
-Religious freedom
-The Gospel

“…and into his courts with praise…”
We should praise Him for:
-His goodness
-His mercy
-His love
-Who He is

“…be thankful unto him…”
It seems like such a general statement, yet it covers so much.  It is basically telling us to be thankful for everything.  Everything we have, we have because God allowed us to have it.
Here are just a few of the many, many things we have to be thankful for:
-Salvation
-Health
-Family
-Provision
-The Bible
-Heaven
-Freedom

What are you thanking Him for today?
