In
as few words as I can, I’d like to talk about 3 or 4 words in the last few verses
of II Corinthians Chapter 1.
First
of all from verse 21 “Now he which
stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;”
The
word stablisheth
means: confirm, or to make sure. It is
God that makes us sure that we are in Chirst; that we are in the Beloved. This is more than just words; it is assurance
by and for Him Who is grace and power and love personified! This truth is both taught by His written word
in many places. One is II Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is
a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
“In
Christ”: the position of the Believer upon receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as
Saviour. Suffice it to say; there is no
greater or safer place to be, while still on this earth than in Christ.
We
also read He has anointed us, meaning consecrated us to the Lord and gifting us
with the gifts and talents for His use.
It is the same original word used when referring to the Lord Jesus as
being the anointed One, the Messiah. In
no way referring that we are like Him in this way, but no less anointed.
Then
from verse 22 “Who hath also sealed us,
and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts”. Sealed! Sealed by God the Father by God
the Holy Spirit. This sure sounds fully
secure to me!! Sealed : to set a seal
upon, mark with a seal, Beloved, we are
marked for and by God, and we are
forever His, secure from Satan. Stablished, anointed, sealed, and lastly:
“Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest
of the Spirit in our hearts.”
Combined
with each of the aforementioned, we have given by God the earnest of the Holy
Spirit of God.
The word
earnest means similar to the way we use it to today; money which in purchases is given as a pledge or down-payment that the
full amount will subsequently be paid.
The
biggest and best difference is that we know Jesus said while on the cross, just
before He gave up the ghost: it is FINISHED! The debt for our sin, and purchase of our
salvation and eternal life was paid in full on Calvary!
