The Bible says...
by Dr. Robert Hooker
Deuteronomy 6:4-9“Hear,
O Israel:The Lord our God is one Lord:And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with
all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these
words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy
children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when
thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And
thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets
between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and
on thy gates.”
If our marriages or our families are to survive and thrive in
this world, we must understand a very simple foundational principle. We see
this principle being initially given to the people of Israel but it is
applicable to every people through every generation.
First it starts with the belief in Almighty God and in
acceptance of His Son, Jesus Christ as our Savior. The scripture clearly teaches that Jesus
Christ was the incarnate God, (God in the flesh). So it begins with belief and acceptance of
Christ and then secondly, it continues with a belief and acceptance of His
Word. I, as a husband and as a father
must believe and accept His Word so that I can honestly and sincerely teach His
Word to my family. From our text we find that this teaching is so vital that it
must be done throughout every day and through all aspects of our daily life.
There should not be spiritual places and times but all that we do and possess
should be committed to God. This does not mean listening to a sermon or
preaching at your husband, wife or children all day long
but rather keeping the Word of God in our hearts and minds so that situations
of life become opportunities to learn and grow, about and through the Word of
God.
I am reminded of a situation that occurred about eight or
nine years ago during a Christmas vacation. All of our married girls were back
in town and of course the unmarried at the time were still living with us at
home. My wife and daughters were all at the kitchen sink, washing, drying and
putting away dishes. All of them seemed to be talking at the same time and I
was listening to the chatter and enjoying the memories of the days when they
were all at home. At some point in the conversation I heard my wife say, “Well
you know girls”, and before she could finish they all replied in unison, “the
Bible says”. You see all of their lives,
they heard this over and over while washing dishes, washing clothes, cleaning
the house or working in the yard. Life, from morning to night was an
opportunity to teach them the Word of God.
No one is or will ever be perfect in child rearing or in
marriage building but if we keep the Word of God in the forefront of our hearts
and minds it will be there in our hearts and minds when it is needed to get us
through the trials and issues of life.
